Traffic Enforcement

The St. John Police Department prioritizes addressing traffic issues such as speeding and running stop signs, which residents frequently cite as major concerns. In response, our Traffic Enforcement Division is dedicated to upholding traffic laws and ensuring road safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Traffic Law Enforcement: Actively enforcing traffic regulations to maintain order and safety on the roads.
  • Accident Response and Investigation: Responding to and thoroughly investigating traffic accidents.
  • Parking Complaints: Addressing and resolving parking-related issues.
  • Accident Reconstruction: Providing expert analysis and reconstruction of traffic accidents.
  • Safety Seminars: Conducting accident awareness seminars at local schools to educate young drivers.
  • Sobriety Checkpoints: Organizing checkpoints to deter and detect impaired driving.
  • Support to Patrol Officers: Assisting with non-traffic-related calls as needed.

Monitoring Equipment

Our department utilizes a radar trailer equipped with an onboard computer to monitor and assess traffic issues throughout the city. The trailer, positioned at various locations, measures and displays vehicle speeds, reminding motorists to adhere to speed limits. It records traffic data, including the number of vehicles and their speeds, helping us analyze traffic patterns and enforce speed regulations effectively.
High-Traffic Areas

The Traffic Division operates a dedicated Traffic Safety Patrol Car and a Police Motorcycle. High-traffic areas, such as St. Charles Rock Road at Endicott and the southbound exit ramp to westbound St. Charles Rock Road, are closely monitored. Oversized stop signs are installed at critical points to enhance safety and reduce accidents.
Checkpoints

Throughout the year, we conduct multiple Sobriety Checkpoints, funded by State or Federal Grants. These checkpoints aim to protect motorists from impaired drivers. In addition to enforcing Driving While Intoxicated laws, St. John ordinances prohibit open alcohol containers in vehicle passenger areas.
Grant-Funded Programs

Our department benefits from various grants that enhance traffic safety, including the Click-It or Ticket Seatbelt Grant and other hazardous moving violation grants. These programs help build awareness, promote safety, and reduce injuries and fatalities caused by traffic accidents. Traffic accidents result in approximately 30,000 deaths annually in the U.S., often due to factors like alcohol, speeding, and not wearing seatbelts. Our grant-funded initiatives aim to address these issues effectively.
Report a Problem or Area of Concern

If you have a specific traffic problem or area of concern, please email us with the location, general time of day the issue occurs, and a description of the problem. If you would like a reply, please indicate that in your message.

Your involvement helps us maintain safer roads and a safer community. Thank you for your cooperation.
