Recycling

On January 1, 2008, the City went to mandatory single stream recycling. This was in conjunction with St. Louis County’s requirements that all trash haulers in St. Louis County include recycling in their basic service as of February 29, 2008.

St. Louis County has instituted this requirement due to the existing landfills filling up so rapidly that in a few years trash will have to be hauled out of state for disposal. That in itself will raise disposal costs for everyone. For more information on recycling, upcoming St. Louis County events and proper waste management, call St. Louis County’s Hotline at 314-286-9200.

Single Stream Recycling

Single stream recycling is much easier than the recycling processes in the past. Residents no longer have to sort their items. Once they rinse recycle items out they can put all the items in one container. The City received a grant which provided 65 gallon recycling toters for all St. John residences free of charge. These toters will remain with the property for future residents to use as well.

Recycle toters have been delivered to every residence in St. John. If you did not receive one, please let us know.

Tips

Remember:

  • All recycle items must be rinsed out before being put into the toter.
  • Only put in recycle items listed on your toter’s lid.
  • Do not mix any trash or non-recycle items in the recycle toter or the trash company will not pick up the recycle toter.
  • For a complete list of recycle items, please reference the recycle toter lid.
